Beyond Bars Sunday Initiative: A Recruitment Talk

May 2, 2018

You are called to Serve. Join us in our mission.

What we need:  Joining the Apostolate should not mean you're having to turn back on your current commitments or concerns.

Your commitment: Decide on what you can commit and simply stick to your word. Do not be discouraged if you can only be a once-a-month Prison Volunteer - that's decidedly better than not wanting a single second of your life to the prisoners and their families.

What YOU can do!

  • Conduct and facilitate formation sessions with our scholars (every 1st Sunday (College Scholars, 2nd Sunday (HS Scholars) & 3rd Sunday (Elementary Scholars)

  • Mentor and Coach life skills with the spouses of the prisoners

  • visit and befriend prisoners

  • Teach choir music

  • Solicit old clothes, medicines, books

  • Invite a priest to celebrate Holy Mass for prisoners

  • visit families of prisoners

  • conduct prayer meetings

  • Introduce livelihood projects

  • Visit the imprisoned sick

  • Encourage family members of prisoners to visit

  • Teach catechism

  • Advocate for prison reforms

  • Develop linkages with service organizations

  • Donate soap, toothpaste, tootbrush, shampoo, furniture, lumber

  • Educate students on the nature of crimes

  • Write letters to prisoners

  • Work for more competent and humane prison management

  • and many other things

What to expect:

As a Prison Volunteer, you will be tried for your patience, for your humility, your constancy, courage, and most of all the purity of your intentions.

Despite countless difficulties, you will keep on coming back to give love to prisoners, wearing your crown of thorns and hiding your wounds from the lashes received.

You will be surprised at yourself, and just when you're tempted to pin a medal on you, Grace descends to wash away illusions of martyrdom or saintliness, and once more its back to business, and you're again but a poor soul trying to be good by doing good.

Prison Apostolate may be "Addicting". Many prospective volunteers who only wanted to dip a toe ended up jumping right in.

Be a volunteer.

Share your God-given talents.

Gain new friends. Grow spiritually.
